Behind those details, however, the electrical system may reflect a time when homes used far fewer appliances and devices than they do today.

Updating outdated wiring may be recommended when existing conductors are deteriorated, improperly modified or unable to support the renovation safely. Wiring may also need to be replaced in the areas being remodeled, even if untouched portions of the house remain as they are.

A whole-house electrical rewire is a much larger undertaking. It may make sense when outdated wiring is widespread, the system has been heavily altered or access will already be available throughout most of the home. The decision should be based on an on-site evaluation rather than the age of the house alone.

Replacing or Expanding the Electrical Panel

An older electrical panel may not provide enough capacity or circuit space for a modern renovation. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and home offices typically require more dedicated electrical service than these spaces needed decades ago.

Home electrical upgrades may include replacing the panel, increasing service capacity or adding a subpanel. These changes can provide room for appliances and features such as:

  • Additional kitchen appliances
  • Heated bathroom floors
  • High-capacity HVAC equipment

The planned use of the home matters. Even if the current panel can support the immediate remodel, it may be worth discussing future needs before choosing the size and configuration of a replacement.

Adding Grounded Outlets and More Convenient Power

Two-prong receptacles are common in older homes and may indicate that the circuit does not include an equipment-grounding conductor. Simply replacing a two-prong outlet with a three-prong version does not create a ground.

An electrician can determine the appropriate solution based on the existing system and applicable requirements. Depending on the circumstances, options may include running new grounded wiring or installing approved protective devices and labeling.

A historic home renovation is also a good time to reconsider outlet placement. Many older rooms have only one or two receptacles because they were built before televisions, computers, chargers and countertop appliances became part of daily life. Adding outlets in practical locations can reduce dependence on extension cords and power strips.

Ground-fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, protection is used in areas where electricity may come into contact with moisture. This commonly includes kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements and outdoor locations. Arc-fault circuit interrupter, or AFCI, protection is intended to reduce the risk posed by certain electrical arcing conditions.

The exact requirements depend on the location and scope of work. Chicago also has its own electrical and permitting requirements, so plans should be reviewed by professionals familiar with local regulations. Planning for Kitchens, Bathrooms and Additions

Electrical planning becomes especially important when a historic home remodel changes how rooms function.

A new kitchen layout may relocate the range, refrigerator and countertop appliances. A bathroom remodel may add ventilation, lighting, heated floors or a higher-powered hair dryer circuit. A home addition may require several new circuits and could place additional demand on the main service.

These decisions should be coordinated before cabinets, tile and finishes are installed. Waiting until later can require opening completed surfaces or changing the design to accommodate electrical limitations.

Preserving Historic Details During Electrical Work

Electrical upgrades for a home should support the renovation without unnecessarily disturbing the features that make the property special.
